Ever wondered how often you should clean your yoga mat? or how?  Here are some helpful tips to care for your yoga mat.   For best results, check with your manufacturer for mat care guidelines.  However, these four should get you on your way!

  1. First, it helps a lot to have clean hands and feet before practice. Avoid using lotions.

  2. After each practice the mat can be wiped off with a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water. There are many mat wipes available but vinegar and water is cheap and easily available. The mat is then allowed to be open and dry before rolling it up.

  3. Each week the mat is washed with mild soap and water. The easiest way to do this is to put a few drops of dishwasher detergent in a bath tub of water and soak the mat in the tub for twenty or thirty minutes. Rub the mat with a wash cloth on both sides. Rinse thoroughly with water and then hang it over the tub rail to dry. Avoid drying it in the sun as sunlight could degrade mat materials. In general, it will take a day or so to thoroughly dry the mat.

  4. On the practical side, it also helps to roll the mat after use by folding the mat in half with the surface you practice on facing each other. Then the folded half mat can be rolled up into a bundle. This way whatever the mat touches on the floor will not be on the surface you lie on during practice.
